AI Tools for Students in Nepal: What Actually Helps, and Where the Line Is

Most advice about AI tools for students is written by people who have never sat a Tribhuvan University exam. It tends to be a list of twenty apps, none of which addresses the actual question, which is: what can I use without damaging my own learning or getting into trouble?

Here is what I tell students when I run sessions on this.

The tools that actually help

The useful applications are unglamorous. None of them produce a finished piece of work, which is exactly why they help.

Explaining something until it lands. If a lecturer's explanation did not work for you, a language model will happily explain the same concept five different ways, at whatever level you ask for. "Explain normalisation like I have never seen a database" and then "now explain it like I am sitting the exam next week" produce genuinely different, genuinely useful answers. This is the single highest-value use and almost nobody talks about it.

Generating practice questions. Paste in your syllabus unit and ask for twenty short questions, then answer them without looking. This works well because you are still doing the thinking — the tool is only producing the prompts.

Attacking your own argument. Paste in your draft thesis statement and ask what a hostile examiner would say. The output is often blunt in a way that supervisors are too polite to be, and you can act on it before submission rather than after.

Structuring a literature pile. If you have thirty papers and no idea how they relate, an assistant is good at proposing groupings. It is not good at telling you which papers matter. That judgement is the part you are at university to develop.

What to be careful with

Fabricated citations are the big one. Every current assistant invents references. Not occasionally — routinely. It will produce a citation with a real journal name, plausible author names, a sensible-looking year and page range, for a paper that has never existed. This is the most common way students get caught, and it is entirely avoidable: if you have not opened the paper, do not cite it.

Confident wrong answers. A model produces an incorrect explanation in exactly the same tone as a correct one. There is no hesitation, no hedging, no signal. For a subject you already understand, you will catch it. For a subject you are learning, you will not — which is precisely when you are using it.

Anything with real data in it. Do not paste personal information, unpublished research data, or anything covered by a confidentiality agreement into a consumer AI tool. Assume it leaves your control the moment you press send.

Where the academic honesty line sits

This is the question students actually want answered, and most guidance dodges it.

The workable test is about who did the thinking. If you asked a tool to explain recursion until you understood it, and then wrote your own answer, you learned recursion — that is tutoring. If you asked it to write your assignment on recursion and submitted that, you learned nothing, and the exam will find out in a few weeks anyway.

The practical problem in Nepal right now is that institutional policies are still being written. Some departments have clear rules, many do not, and "nobody told me it was banned" has not worked as a defence anywhere in the world. So:

  1. Ask your department for its policy, in writing.
  2. If there is no policy, ask your supervisor directly what they consider acceptable, and keep the reply.
  3. When in doubt, disclose what you used. Disclosure has never turned an acceptable use into misconduct. Concealment has done the reverse.

Nepal context

Two things make this different here.

Connectivity is uneven, so tools that need a constant connection are less useful during load-shedding or in districts with patchy service than the articles written in San Francisco assume. Download what you need when you have bandwidth.

Free tiers matter more. Most students are not paying twenty dollars a month. The free tiers of the major assistants are genuinely capable for study work, and anyone telling you that you need a paid plan to revise for an exam is selling something.

What you should do

Pick one assistant. Learn to give it proper context — your syllabus, your level, what you have already tried. Use it to understand things, generate practice, and stress-test your own work. Verify every factual claim and every citation independently. Get your department's policy in writing.

That is the whole method. It is less exciting than the tool lists, and it is the part that survives into your working life.

The students who get the most out of these tools are the ones who already study well. AI amplifies an existing method; it does not supply one. If your revision strategy is currently "read the notes the night before", adding an AI assistant produces a faster version of a strategy that was not working.

Start with whichever one you can access reliably and for free, because the differences matter far less than the habits you build. ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini all handle explanation, summarising and practice questions well. Pick one, learn to give it proper context, and switch later if you hit a specific limitation.

Is using AI for coursework cheating?

It depends entirely on your institution's policy and on what you asked it to do. Using an assistant to explain a concept you did not understand is closer to tutoring. Submitting generated text as your own writing is misconduct almost everywhere. Get the policy in writing before you rely on either.

Can I cite a source an AI assistant gave me?

Only after you have found and read the actual source yourself. Assistants routinely produce references that look correct — real journal, plausible authors, correct formatting — for papers that do not exist. Verify every citation in the original database before it goes anywhere near your bibliography.
